The Before Times
I got to the grocery store at the exact moment they opened today. Something was up with the automatic door so I pushed it open manually, got my baguette and blueberries, and was walking out the exit when I counted 6 people waiting outside the front door.
I had to pass by them to get to my car so– with as warm a smile as I could muster– I walked by and said, “You know it's open, right?”
Someone behind me– clearly irritated– asked “How’d you get in?”
With my gentlest tone, I said “Like this” and pushed the door open.
The clouds parted. A ray of sunshine broke through. A little bird coughed. She was trying to chirp but you know, Canadian wildfires and all.
Anywho… I was like a god to those 6 people. Without my holy intervention, they’d probably still be there now.
Well… either that or… technology makes us forget the before times.
So what does that have to do with work?
Some day, all those RPA bots– all that automation that removes knowledgeable people from a process– well, they’re going to fail– because that’s what software does eventually.
And when it does, there’s going to be a long, long line outside the entrance of Whole Foods.
